Nelly Matova was born in Eastern Europe. She became interested in choral singing in elementary school, and began studying conducting while in the Dobrin Petkov High School for Music and Dance in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She holds a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the State Music Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria, and a DMA degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was fortunate to study and work with conductors such as Krum Maximov, Vassil Arnaoudov, Volker Hempfling, Chester Alwes, Fred Stoltzfus, and Donald Schleicher.
Nelly has held various positions, including that of a secondary school music teacher, college music instructor and conductor for various institutions in Bulgaria and US, and assistant conductor of the academic choir "Angel Manolov" in Sofia. She also conducted a children's choir, and was for several years director of the community choir "Aprilov-Palauzov", both in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. She has also served as music director for different churches, lastly at Christ Lutheran Church, Monticello, Illinois. She often returns back to her native country Bulgaria as clinician, and teachers summer workshops on choral conducting.
Nelly has a broad experience as a singer. She performed with the Sofia Chamber Choir under the late Prof. Vassil Arnaudov. With this choir she toured and recorded extensively in Bulgaria and all over Europe. She also was a singer in BACH (Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana) with Chester Alwes conductor. She likes singing advanced choral repertoire.
Her scholarly interests are centered in the area of contemporary choral music, and especially the music of North, Central and Eastern Europe. Her doctoral dissertation was concerned with the music of Czech composer Petr Eben. In addition, she is interested in the choral conducting pedagogy and relative pitch training for choirs.
Nelly likes an eclectic repertoire, and is always looking for challenges in the choral art. She passionately advocates the music of young composers.
In addition to her work with Cappella Orpheus, Nelly is a music instructor in Matova Music School. In the school, she teaches piano, music theory and aural skills , fundamentals of the conducting and score reading.
